November 9, 2021 -- NanoString Technologies has released the first high-plex, single-cell in situ dataset from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue samples generated by its CosMx Spatial Molecular Imager (SMI).

The CosMx SMI dataset contains a protein morphology map that includes (A) a subcellular expression map of 960 genes, (B) cell segmentation, (C) a spatially resolved cell type map, and (D) non-small cell lung cancer tissues. Image courtesy of NanoString.

NanoString used the CosMx SMI to characterize FFPE tissue from eight different non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) samples from five patients. The SMI data creates a spatial cell atlas of NSCLC tissue by defining a subcellular expression map of 960 genes and a single-cell map of 18 identified cell types, the company said.

The CosMx SMI dataset consists of open-source, spatial in situ imaging and molecular data available from NanoString's website and analyzed by the research community. The complete dataset consists of over 800,000 single cells, approximately 260 million transcripts, and a spatially resolved cell type map of NSCLC tissue across a 150 mm2 area, NanoString said.

The CosMx SMI is expected to launch in the second half of 2022, according to the company.
