Thermo Fisher awarded $193M for pipette tip production

September 2, 2021 -- Thermo Fisher Scientific will receive $193 million in a contract award from the U.S. Department of Defense to help establish U.S. production of pipette tips.

The company will use the funds to build a new energy-efficient manufacturing facility for pipette tips, which are used in disease research and in high volumes for processing diagnostic tests nationally, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, the company said.

The new facility will be in North Carolina and will be designed to meet Thermo Fisher's carbon-neutrality goals. Construction is estimated to be complete by the third quarter of 2024, with pipette tip manufacturing starting earlier. The new facility is expected to create hundreds of new jobs in the region.
