August 28, 2020 -- Thermo Fisher Scientific has opened its new $40 million facility in Lenexa, KS, dedicated to viral transport media (VTM) production. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on August 28.

The facility created more than 300 jobs and added 120,000 sq ft of manufacturing capacity. The company also announced that they will expand the site to meet the expected sustained demand for COVID-19 testing.

In May, the company received a contract from the U.S. government to provide a significant quantity of highly specialized VTM for COVID-19 sample collection. The VTM is dispensed into plastic tubes that are used to safely collect and transport clinical specimens containing viruses. Thermo Fisher has quickly ramped up production in Lenexa from 50,000 units per week to now more than 8 million per week.
