June 4, 2020 -- The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announced a five-year, $1.6 billion U.S. commitment to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, to deliver vaccines to developing countries. The announcement was made at the Global Vaccine Summit 2020 on June 4.
The funding will help Gavi provide vaccines to an additional 300 million children of the world's most vulnerable communities. This would bring the total number of children immunized with Gavi support to over 1 billion since 2000. The pledge includes $75 million to the Gavi Matching Fund that was announced in January.
The Gates Foundation is also dedicating $100 million to Gavi's new effort to purchase COVID-19 vaccines for lower income countries through a new COVID-19 Vaccine Advance Market Commitment. This includes $50 million of new funding announced, which is in addition to a $50 million pledge that was made at the Coronavirus Global Response International pledging event in May.
