April 24, 2020 -- The nonprofit consortium Human Vaccines Project has launched an initiative to ensure COVID-19 vaccines are developed for vulnerable populations.
Its COVID Vaccine Initiative (CVI) will focus on accelerating vaccine development for aging populations and those living in countries with low and middle incomes. Founding partners include FHI 360 and the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP) at the University of Minnesota.
The initiative's research and development program will use immune monitoring, systems biology, and artificial intelligence to conduct studies to determine how to generate effective immunity in these populations.
The advocacy and policy program aims to disseminate critical information and data relevant to accelerating vaccine development. The CVI will produce weekly reports and host a bi-weekly Global Lab Meeting beginning in May 2020 to bring the scientific community together. It will develop a roadmap to ensure research and development challenges are addressed.
