Thermo Fisher Scientific introduces high-resolution, high-throughput mass spectrometer

By The Science Advisory Board staff writers

June 5, 2023 -- Thermo Fisher Scientific on Monday introduced its Orbitrap Astral mass spectrometer, which combines high resolution, high throughput, and high speed with deep proteome coverage.

Thermo Fisher is showcasing the mass spectrometer at the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) annual conference in Houston from June 3 to June 8.

The firm said that the new Astral analyzer builds on its Orbitrap mass spectrometry platform with new technology to provide up to two times deeper proteome coverage and up to four times more throughput than current mass spectrometers.

The deeper coverage allows researchers to uncover previously undetected proteins, aiding in the discovery of new biomarkers, which in turn may reveal diseases earlier and lead to the development of new therapies, the firm added.
