March 15, 2021 -- AstraZeneca has reaffirmed that its COVID-19 vaccine is safe following concerns that the vaccine increases a person's risk of thrombotic events.
After reviewing all available safety data of the more than 17 million people vaccinated with the Astra Zeneca vaccine in the European Union and in the U.K., the company found no evidence of an increased risk of pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), or thrombocytopenia in a particular country or vaccine batch or defined age group or gender.
There have been 15 events of deep vein thrombosis and 22 events of pulmonary embolism reported among those given the vaccine as of March 8, which is lower than what is expected to occur naturally in a general population, according to the company. AstraZeneca will continue to monitor the issue.
