February 17, 2021 -- A combined 350 million additional doses of COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer and BioNTech and Moderna will be flooding into Europe in 2021.
The European Commission (EC) purchased an additional 200 million doses of the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine Comirnaty to distribute in the 27 European Union member states in 2021. This means the commission has committed to ordering a total of 500 million doses that will be delivered in 2021. The commission has the option to request a supply of an additional 100 million doses in the future.
Additionally, the EC purchased an additional 150 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine from Moderna, which are scheduled to be delivered in the third and fourth quarters of 2021. This means the commission has committed to ordering a total of 310 million doses that will be delivered in 2021. The deal gives the commission the option to purchase an additional 150 million doses to be delivered in 2022.
