New bio-imaging techniques help scientists understand the early stages of Parkinson's disease
Scientists observed, for the first time ever, how variants of Parkinson's disease-associated protein alpha-synuclein change over time and identify the initial stages of protein aggregates. A new study published in Nature Communications on October 10 helps to clarify the why treatment challenges associated with Parkinson's disease (PD), when does it begin.  Discuss
Chemists develop new technique to build super-active catalysts
New highly desirable catalysts, made mostly of precious metals, have 24 different faces that present atoms at the surface in ways that make them more catalytically active than current commercially available products.  Discuss
Breakthrough electrochemical technique may bring cost savings to drug companies
Researchers have developed a simple new method for the creation of hindered ether compounds, which are often important components of many drugs and commercial products. Hindered ethers have been traditionally difficult to manufacture, but scientists at Scripps Research have published a new electrochemistry technique in Nature on September 9, which allows these compounds to be produced faster and more efficiently.  Discuss
Fluorescent molecular probe used to detect temperature inside individual cells
Modified biocompatible molecular rotor, termed boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY), has been shown to detect temperatures inside single cells. Researchers at Rice University led by chemist Angel Martí published the technique in the Journal of Physical Chemistry B.  Discuss
