September 28, 2021 -- PacBio is partnering with the European Reference Genome Atlas (ERGA) consortium to support its efforts to protect biodiversity by making reference genomes for European plant and animal species.

PacBio's HiFi sequencing allows scientists to create genetic maps of plant and animal species. ERGA plans to generate maps for at least 200,000 species in Europe that are at risk of extinction.

PacBio is involved with other consortiums, including the Darwin Tree of Life and Aquatic Symbiosis Genomics initiatives with the Wellcome Sanger Institute, the Vertebrate Genomes Project, the Earth BioGenome Project, and the California Conservation Genomics Project, the company said.
