Google Cloud launches Healthcare Data Engine

By Will Morton, The Science Advisory Board contributing writer

July 22, 2021 -- Google Cloud announced the preview of Healthcare Data Engine, a tool for healthcare and life sciences organizations that integrates and standardizes data from multiple silos, including medical records, claims, clinical trials, and research data.

Healthcare Data Engine was designed to help operational leaders, researchers, and clinicians gain real-time, holistic views of patient longitudinal records and enable the deployment of advanced analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) applications in a secure, compliant, and scalable cloud environment, the company said.

"Access to the right information, at the right time, is critical to saving lives," said Dr. Joe Corkery, Google Cloud's director of product management, in a statement.

Approximately 87% of physicians indicate that data interoperability should be a priority at their healthcare organizations and 95% agree that access to more complete patient records helps them make diagnoses more quickly and accurately, according to a recent survey by the Harris Poll commissioned by the company.

In addition, 90% of physicians responded that they would be able to provide more personalized care for their patients if they could reduce time reviewing or updating patient records by just 5%, the survey found.

Healthcare Data Engine builds on and extends the core capabilities of Google Cloud's platform-as-a-service (PaaS) product, Healthcare application programming interface (API), a fully managed, serverless data warehouse that enables scalable analysis over petabytes of data.

The platform accepts data in the Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) format, which has become a standard in the healthcare industry. It is also able to map to FHIR more than 90% of messages in the Health Level Seven International Version 2 (HL7v2) clinical messaging format. This will enable users to get up and running more quickly, according to Google.

The new Healthcare Data Engine is available in private preview. Implementation partners Deloitte, Maven Wave, Quantiphi, and SADA are ready to help healthcare and life science organizations deploy Healthcare Data Engine at scale, Google Cloud reported.

In addition, partners such as Mathematica and others are deploying novel applications integrated with Healthcare Data Engine. Healthcare Data Engine is in use today by healthcare organizations such as Indiana University Health, the Mayo Clinic, and others.
