October 8, 2020 -- MilliporeSigma celebrated the topping out of its new membrane production plant in Darmstadt, Germany, with a ceremony on October 8.

The plant will expand the company's manufacturing of Millipore Express membranes, which are critical components of Millipore Express filters and ensure sterility of biological drug products. Millipore Express membranes will be manufactured at the new facility in Darmstadt, then processed into filters for pharmaceutical production at MilliporeSigma's existing device Center of Excellence in Jaffrey, NH.

The new plant will create approximately 55 new jobs within the four-story building, which will house immersion membrane casting equipment, quality control laboratories, and offices. Construction began in March 2020 and is expected to be completed in 2022, followed by production process validation and commercialization.

The $165 million investment in the plant is part of parent company Merck's $1.2 billion investment in its global headquarters in Darmstadt.
