August 28, 2020 -- Moderna is in discussion with the Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare of Japan (MHLW) to potentially purchase 40 million or more doses of its messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine candidate against COVID-19 to support Japan's efforts in securing vaccines as soon as possible.

Under the agreement, Moderna would supply mRNA-1273 and Takeda Pharmaceutical Company would distribute it in the first half of 2021, upon successful regulatory approval, said Kato Katsunobu, minister of MHLW, in a meeting on August 28.
