The BII & Science Prize for Innovation award will be given to scientists who have spanned disciplines to leverage basic science with an eye toward applications in the marketplace.

Successful applicants will have made significant advances in producing results that have been protected as intellectual property and licensed to a commercial entity, according to the organizations. These include proprietary drugs and biologics, diagnostics, therapeutic interventions, and healthcare information technology.

Award winners will be determined based on a 1,000-word essay in which applicants describe the research they have performed. One grand prize winner and two runners-up will receive a cash prize, which is to be presented at an awards show celebration in Copenhagen. The winning essay submissions will also be published in Science.

In addition, the selected winner and runners-up will have an opportunity to be paired with BII's business development team to evaluate their eligibility for BII's programs. If eligible, the winners will receive assistance submitting a proposal to BII.

The deadline for submissions is November 1, 2021; the winner and runners-up will be announced in April 2022. Eligibility and application procedures can be found on BII's website.
