3M launches new chromatography solution for biomanufacturing

By The Science Advisory Board staff writers

February 9, 2021 -- 3M Health Care has launched its 3M Polisher ST product, a single-use anion exchange chromatography solution designed to replace reusable polishing columns for biologic drug manufacturing.

The Polisher ST is a synthetic, fully encapsulated, single-use membrane chromatography solution that contains two complementary anion exchange functional media: a quaternary ammonium ("Q") functional nonwoven and a guanidinium-functional membrane. The Q-functional nonwoven provides reduction of turbidity, DNA, and endotoxins, as well as capacity for host-cell protein and virus reduction. The novel guanidinium functionality in the guanidinium-functional membrane provides host-cell protein and virus reduction in a salt tolerant manner.

The new product improves manufacturing workflows by reducing the number of process steps and it can be used in continuous bioprocessing. The solution can increase biomass production in therapeutic recombinant protein processes in all operating conditions, and to replace downstream anion exchange polishing columns in fed batch and/or continuous manufacturing.
