NIH announces inaugural awards to early career researchers focused on genomics

August 27, 2019 -- The National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) announced on August 27th, that it was awarding six early career researchers the Genomic Innovator Awards. The program will award a total of $500,000 over the course of five years.

The NHGRI created the Genomic Innovators Awards in 2018 to compliment the more traditional NIH grants. These awards will support investigators studying genome biology, genomic medicine, technology development and societal implication of genomic advances. The researchers selected for these special awards have outstanding records within the genomics field. The NHGRI hopes that the funding will facilitate creative, ambitious and innovative research.

Principle investigators receiving the 2019 Genomic Innovator Awards are:

  • Channabasavaiah Gurumurthy, Ph.D., at University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha
  • Eric Gamazon, Ph.D., at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, Tennessee
  • Jason Vassy, M.D., at Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts
  • Luca Pinello, Ph.D., at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts
  • Stacy Gray, M.D., at The City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center, Duarte, California
  • Timothy O’Connor, Ph.D., at University of Maryland-Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland
