To address antibiotic resistance, researchers have developed a machine-learning approach that can search millions of known chemicals to find new potential antimicrobial compounds. Phages containing huge amounts of DNA are found around the globe
An inventory of over 350 DNA sequences from phage genomes revealed that these genomes can be over 200,000 base pairs in length and found the largest phage genome ever described at 735,000 base pairs in length. The report published in Nature on February 12, evaluated the prevalence, diversity and ecosystem distribution of phages with large genomes.  Discuss

A research team from the University of Trento find a novel method for using old drugs in new ways, specifically for Metabolic Syndrome. This revolutionary technique, published on November 18 in Nature Communications, uses a systems biology approach to investigate deregulated biological processes and identify drug repurposing candidates.  Discuss
Software improves the speed of identifying potential new antibiotics
Computational biologists at Carnegie Mellon University and seven other institutions developed a software tool that can play a high-speed "Match Game" to identify bioactive molecules and microbial genes that produce them so they can be evaluated as new antibiotics and other therapeutic agents.
