Sample Preparation in 2018: a Critical and Rapidly Growing Technology
Imagine a scientist who is on the brink of an important discovery in oncology. She believes to have discovered a new tumor suppressor gene and wants to track this protein’s movement through skin cells by forming a recombinant fluorescent protein. In order to construct this protein, she needs to first extract and purify DNA from the cells of her model organism to identify the gene of interest. Unfortunately, she has consistently failed to purify the DNA due to contaminations in her alcohol-based wash.  Discuss
Oncologists Embrace the Liquid Biopsy for Precision Cancer Treatment
Here at The Science Advisory Board we aim to keep ahead of the curve with the latest breakthroughs in the life sciences field. An exciting advancement to follow in this space is precision medicine. The NIH defines precision medicine as “an emerging approach for disease treatment and prevention that takes into account individual variability in genes, environment, and lifestyle for each person." Within the last week, the liquid biopsy has made headlines as a diagnostic test for patients with cancer.  Discuss
Tech Overview - Flash Chromatography
Today’s focus will be on flash chromatography, a special type of column chromatography. Flash chromatography is a preparative liquid chromatography method that can quickly and easily separate organic compounds. This technique offers fast results because pressurized gas pushes the solvent through the column of the stationary phase, rather than rely on slower, gravity-based chromatography.  Discuss
Tech Overview - GC/MS
Today’s piece will discuss gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). GC/MS is a technique used to identify components of complex mixtures and determine the molecular weights of the compounds.  Discuss
Overlooked benefits of using polyclonal antibodies
The benefits of polyclonal antibodies as tools for assay-specific target discovery and detection are numerous. As the future of basic research, diagnostics and biomarker discovery is dependent on high-quality reproducible data, there is a need to understand the importance of and benefits of these valuable tools.  Discuss
