Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University used cryoelectron microscopy (cryo-EM) to observe protein structure and function at a molecular level. This discovery, published in Cell on October 3 describes the structure of P2X receptor, a cellular membrane protein receptor, and provides insight into how the cation channel functions.  Discuss

Bacteria use 'poisoned arrowheads' to defeat competition, similar to antibiotics
According to a new study published in Cell Reports on October 1, bacteria use weapons to vanquish their competitors. Researchers at Imperial College London have uncovered a novel weapon that bacteria employ which has a similar mechanism of action as common antibiotics.  Discuss
New research suggests circular RNAs are important for cardiac healing
Researchers from the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University describe how circular RNA fills a critical role during tissue repair after heart attacks, due to a unique ability to absorb harmful molecules. The study was published September 20 in Nature Communications.  Discuss
Novel "death star" nanoparticle discovered for potential use in targeted therapies
A novel nanoparticle has been reported by researchers at San Diego State University with the potential to serve as a delivery system for therapeutics. The research published on September 17 in eLife describes how Metamorphosis Associated Contractile structures (MACs) trigger metamorphosis in tubeworms. Moreover, they identify a novel protein (with syringe-like structures, nicknamed Death Star for the effect it has) responsible for the activation of metamorphosis.  Discuss
Breakthrough electrochemical technique may bring cost savings to drug companies
Researchers have developed a simple new method for the creation of hindered ether compounds, which are often important components of many drugs and commercial products. Hindered ethers have been traditionally difficult to manufacture, but scientists at Scripps Research have published a new electrochemistry technique in Nature on September 9, which allows these compounds to be produced faster and more efficiently.  Discuss

The function of an enzyme that is highly expressed in many cancers has been revealed to regulate key pathways in cancer metabolic adaptation. Researchers at the Georgia Cancer Center and Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University published their findings in Hepatology.  Discuss
New drug target identified for common brain cancer
Research led by the Cleveland Clinic has identified a potential new therapy in the treatment of glioblastoma. An article published in Cancer Discovery on August 21, identifies FGF2 (fibroblast growth factor 2), as a novel drug target for glioblastoma, the most common primary malignant brain tumor.  Discuss
Genomic and microbial analyses reveal microbe independently degrades oil to gas
Methanoliparia, an archaea found in deep within oil reservoirs, may degrade oil to methane all by itself. Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in Bremen, Germany and the MARUM, Centre for Marine Environmental Sciences provide genomic and microbial evidence of Methanoliparia‚Äôs ability to transform long-chain hydrocarbons to methane. Detecting HPV in women is improved with the aid of a new molecular approach
A new technique called HPV RNA-Seq can provide a second-line test in HPV-positive patients to reduce unnecessary colposcopies and even be used as a two-in-one test combining HPV typing with triage capabilities. Researchers from Institut Pasteur and the Pathogen Discovery Laboratory in Paris, France published their findings in The Journal of Molecular Diagnostics on August 12, 2019.  Discuss
