Applying Toxicology to Clinical Research

Ravi Shankar Nagarajan, B.V.Sc, M.V.Sc is a veterinary pathologist in Ahmedabad, India. After attending TamilNadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University where he studied M.V.Sc( Veterinary Pathology), he worked as a veterinary officer in a poultry disease diagnostic laboratory for one of the leading Poultry Feed manufacturer in India. His responsibilities included providing veterinary service to all the poultry farmers in the area of Rayalaseema of the Andhra State. This area was quite large and covered nearly five districts, which encompassed 150 farms.  

Dr. Nagarajan visited the farms that had disease outbreaks so that he could first diagnose the disease and then provide the appropriate treatment.  In addition, he also helped the farmers improve their management and raise the standard of care the animals received. In the lab, his team performed water purity tests, microbiological identification, isolation of organisms by agar culture, and histopathology.

Since he was ultimately interested in area of toxicology, Dr. Nagarajan later joined Zydus Research Centre as a toxicopathologist. He currently works in the Centre’s Pharmacology and Toxicology Department. His lab is responsible for ensuring Good Laboratory Practices for preclinical trials involving new compounds to treat obesity. Dr. Nagarajan evaluates histopathology slides from toxicity studies as well as conducts these toxicity studies.

During his free time, Dr. Nagarajan likes playing cricket and badminton. He also enjoys listening to his vast musical collection with his friends.
