Member Reflections Upon Reaching the 25,000 Mark
Posted 5/25/2005

As The Science Advisory Board commemorates achieving (and then exceeding)  25,000 members, I would like to highlight several member comments we have received about their experiences on the Board.  Since 1997, The Science Advisory Board has become a central hub of biomedical and life science information on the Internet.

This information includes profiles of scientists and medical professionals in the Member Spotlight column; book, website and product reviews; discussions on science, medical and policy issues in the Discussion Forum; Blogs on a range of issues from science ethics to sales reps; editorials on cutting edge or controversial topics in the Perspectives column; and job and curricula vitae postings.

“SAB membership for me is an open window or an open door for connecting me with the whole world's science community. When I got membership I could not imagine such a forum with excellent opportunities of seeking and sharing opinions and knowledge and communicating with other scientists of diverse nations. I found it a wonderful experience that I can see and share opinions and experiences in science and research with such a large community. And I have got a lot of information about recent trends in research and ways of collecting research publication, protocols, scientific suppliers information and a lot. I observed opinions of a multicultural and multinational community on various issues, which is of great interest to me and useful in my research and analysis too. And about SAB membership impact, I think, it broadens my way of thinking, opened new windows of ideas in my creative mind, influence my views on various issues by observation and comparison of views of my own and of other community and may be other which I may explore in near future. A lot of thanks and congratulations to The SAB team and many good wishes for its further development into an even more influential community.”
-Graduate Student, Punjab University, Pakistan

As a member of The Science Advisory Board, you have been part of a virtual community of life science and medical professionals that regularly expresses its opinions about the tools and technology of the life sciences industry. These opinions—as obtained through Science Advisory Board-sponsored studies—are already shaping production and development of products in the life sciences industry. The Science Advisory Board is a positive force influencing the future conduct of science and medicine.

“Through The SAB, I know that my opinions about products and technologies are being listened to by the companies I interact with in my research. While the opinion of a single scientist may or may not be considered, if a company hears the same advice from thousands of customers they will either listen and adapt or become a follower when it comes to innovative products. Companies need to listen to The SAB members because we are the voice of the biomedical research community.”
-Principal Investigator, National Institutes of Health, Maryland

Everyone in the medical and life sciences community has opinions to share about the tools and techniques of their profession. The Science Advisory Board is the venue to facilitate this sharing be it through expressing your opinions in an online study, writing a product review or participating in a discussion forum.

“I became a member of The Science Advisory Board (SAB) in November, 2004. In my opinion, it is an effective and different approach to expand and share the scientific knowledge and information with others. SAB provides accurate, useful and current resources to its members. Depending on the time, skills and willingness of a member, SAB allows you to participate in surveys, writing reviews, or discussion forums. SAB gives an equal chance to all of its members independent of status (student, staff or faculty) or nationality. I think SAB provides a remarkable, beneficial and quite favorable way to get in touch with biomedical society. I am proud to be a member of The SAB.”
–Postdoctoral Fellow, Ohio State University, Ohio

The Science Advisory Board makes all of these avenues of information sharing—plus many more—not only possible, but also easy and rewarding. Some of these rewards include professional networking, exclusive previews of new technologies, compensation through the ViewPoints rewards program, consulting opportunities with The Science Advisory Board, and access to a vast array of employment resources.

“I have found wonderful career development resources through my membership with the Science Advisory Board. Additionally, the forum discussion boards are full of great information and debates! And the prizes awarded for participation in SAB aren't too shabby either.”
-Staff Scientist, Mayo Clinic, Minnesota

Science Advisory Board members—whether they are a researcher in the laboratory or a health care worker in the field—are continually searching for effective means to expand their level of knowledge. Information is a valuable commodity in disciplines like science and medicine, which continually transform themself. The Science Advisory Board therefore prides itself in providing its members with resources that are useful, current, and most importantly, accurate.

“SAB has become a part of my scientific life - sometimes I discuss the actual topics, I ask something via the Forum... It helps me to be in touch with other scientists, even if they are not from the same branch. Keep doing good work! “
-Research Assistant, Charles University, Czech Republic

Your contributions have made The Science Advisory Board the place to go to for sharing information, opinions and insights with your colleagues from around the world!  We look forward to your continued involvement in this dynamic, online community.
