Information Collected and How It Is Used

What We Collect

The Science Advisory Board's primary goal in requesting your personal information is to be able to invite you to participate in studies that match your expertise and experience and to direct you to specific Web site features that may be of interest to you.

A) Personal Information

In order to join The Science Advisory Board we will need to collect information identifying who you are, your e-mail address and your mailing address. Additionally, you will be asked to provide details regarding the type of research or work you to do and identify the tools and techniques you use. If you opt not to provide your personal information, you can still access some of our Web site content; however, you will not be able to view specialized content or participate in studies or featured events.

B) Aggregate and Statistical Data

The Science Advisory Board may collect certain aggregate data referred to as Web log information (such as your Web browser, operating system, pages visited, etc.) and use cookies when you visit our site. For example, when you visit our Web site, our Web server will automatically recognize some non-personal information, including but not limited to the date and time you visited our site, the pages you visited, the referrer (i.e., the Website you came from), the type of browser you are using (e.g. Netscape, Internet Explorer), the type of operating system you are using (e.g., Windows '95 or Mac OS), and the domain name and address of your Internet service provider (e.g., Comcast, AOL).

However, neither the Web log information nor the cookies collects any personal information such as your name or e-mail address, and in no way are used to identify our users.

How We Use It

A) Personal Information

Personal information received from you online will only be used by The Science Advisory Board to deliver to you the interactive studies or special events to which you have been invited or are otherwise eligible to participate and to inform you of other studies or special events in which you may participate. Your participation in all studies sponsored by The Science Advisory Board is completely confidential, and we will NEVER release your personal information to a third party. Results will be reported only in aggregate and no personally identifying information will be released.

Additionally, we may respond to your comments or requests for information or we may contact you if needed in the course of processing or shipping prizes or products from our Rewards catalog. We also use personal information about you to improve our content and product offerings and to statistically analyze site usage. We may also use data in your Profile to deliver information to you that, in some cases, is targeted to your interests, especially to promote new services. We believe these uses allow us to improve our site and better tailor it to meet our members’ needs. The Science Advisory Board does not collect personal information automatically, but we may combine non-personal information collected automatically (e.g., through Web log data) with your previously submitted personal information.

B) Aggregate and Statistical Data

The Science Advisory Board uses Web log information (such as your Web browser, operating system, pages visited, etc.) to help us improve our Web site design and functionality, to identify popular features, and for other managerial purposes. In addition, Web logs may be used—if necessary—to help identify any person attempting to break into or damage our Web site. We may share Web log information with law enforcement agencies if we believe that we have evidence of a violation of computer security or related laws.
